Incorporated on February 22, 1838
On February 22, 1840, J.C. became part of the newly created Hudson County. Jersey City’s nicknames are: J.C., Chilltown, Sixth Borough, America’s Golden Door, and Wall Street West. Its mottos are: “Let Jersey Prosper” and “Jersey City, Make It Yours”.
City government has spent a lot of city resources in the redevelopment of the Jersey City’s waterfront. This has made the city one of the largest centers of banking and finance in the United States and has led to the district and city being nicknamed “Wall Street West”.
